Barbie Doll in Polish culture
Abstract
Przedmiotem pracy są zróżnicowane formy obecności lalki Barbie w polskiej twórczości artystycznej – literaturze, teatrze, sztukach wizualnych, malarstwie oraz filmie. Punktem wyjścia rozważań jest teza słynnej książki Barbie jako ikona kultury Mary F. Rogers, głosząca, że zabawka firmy Mattel już od momentu jej stworzenia pozostaje czynnikiem sprawczym życia społecznego w Stanach Zjednoczonych. W mojej pracy interesuje mnie pytanie, jak wobec tego wygląda i z czym wiąże się obecność lalki w Polsce – od lat osiemdziesiątych po lata ostatnie.
Rozprawa składa się z siedmiu rozdziałów. W dwóch pierwszych koncentruję się głównie na historyczno-socjologicznych aspektach obecności lalki Barbie w Polsce i na świecie. W pięciu kolejnych skupiam się na perspektywie analityczno-interpretacyjnej. Układ rozdziałów wynika z ujęcia problemowego – prezentacji stopniowego kolonizowania przez lalkę kolejnych sfer społecznych i kulturowych: dziecięcej zabawy, świata fetyszyzowanej konsumpcji oraz wzorców cielesności. Ostatnie rozdziały prezentują przede wszystkim możliwe reakcje na silną pozycję Barbie we współczesnej kulturze.
The subject of the disertation are various forms of the Barbie doll's presence in works of Polish literature, theater, visual arts, painting and film. The disertation opens with the thesis of the famous book Barbie culture by Mary F. Rogers, saying that the Mattel’s toy from the moment of its creation remains the causative factor of social life in the United States. In my thesis I am answering the question how the Barbie fenomenon developed in polish cultural context, what factors had an impact on its characteristics and what where the circumstances of the doll’s presence in Poland - since the eighties to the last years. There are seven chapters in the dissertation. In the first two, I conduct reaserach mainly on the historical and sociological aspects of the Barbie doll's presence in Poland and in the world. In the next five, I focus on the analytical and interpretative perspectives. The composition of the chapters results from a problematic approach - presentation of the gradual colonization of subsequent social and cultural spheres by the doll: children's play, the world of fetishized consumption and corporeality patterns. The last chapters are present mainly possible reactions to Barbie's strong position in contemporary culture.
