Auffassung’s idea and the role of historical interpretation in Ernst Bernheim’s conception of history
Abstract
Praca dotyczy koncepcji trzeciego etapu pracy historyka, w ujęciu Ernsta Bernheima, którą nazwał Auffassung. Rozprawa została podzielona na sześć rozdziałów. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiłam zarówno sylwetkę autora Lehrbuch der historischen Methode und der Geschichtsphilosophie, jak i teoretyczne koncepcje interpretacji historycznej, wypracowane przez jego poprzedników w Niemczech: Johanna Christopha Gatterera, Augusta Ludwiga Schlözera oraz Johanna Gustava Droysena. Do grona tych uczonych włączyłam również Joachima Lelewela, ponieważ pozostając pod wpływem szkoły historycznej z Getyngi, przedstawił on samodzielną propozycję teoretyczną. Przy badaniu biografii Bernheima udało mi się zgromadzić wiele nowych, niepublikowanych materiałów, których część zawarłam w tej pracy. W rozdziale drugim przedstawiłam podstawowe zagadnienia dotyczące koncepcji metodyki historycznej, opracowanej w Podręczniku. Omawiam tu zarówno definicję historii, etapy pracy historyka nad źródłem oraz samą metodę historyczną Bernheima, jak i jego stosunek do praw historii, a co za tym idzie również do pozytywizmu. Wśród tych zagadnień znalazła się też problematyka dotycząca budowania pojęć w historii, a także kwestia faktu historycznego. W rozdziale trzecim podjęłam ogólną próbę sformułowania koncepcji Auffassung w dziele Bernheima, wskazując na jej oryginalność i rozpiętość ujęcia. Rozdział czwarty wyjaśnia, czym w idei niemieckiego uczonego jest historyczna interpretacja, która mieści się w zakresie rekonstrukcji historycznej, lecz w żadnym razie nie może jej zastępować. W rozdziale piątym przedstawiłam koncepcję czynników ogólnych, których uwzględnienie umożliwia rekonstrukcję historyczną. Nazwałam je pozaźródłowymi, gdyż nie pochodzą z analizy materiału źródłowego. Rozdział szósty został poświęcony omówieniu konkretnej rekonstrukcji historycznej, jaką przeprowadził Bernheim w odniesieniu do Vita Brunonis pióra Ruotgera.
This work concerns the concept of the third stage of the historian's work, in terms of Ernst Bernheim, which is called by him the Auffassung. The text was divided into six chapters. In the first chapter, I presented both the profile of the author of the Lehrbuch der historischen Methode und der Geschichtsphilosophie and theoretical concepts of the interpretation of history, worked out by his predecessors in Germany: Johann Christoph Gatterer, August Schlözer Ludwig and Johann Gustav Droysen. Among these scholars I put also Joachim Lelewel because being under the influence of the historical school of Göttingen, he presented an independent proposal of the theory of history. When examining the biography of Bernheim I managed to gather a lot of new, unpublished material, some of which I has included in this work. In the second chapter I presented the basic ideas of the concept of historical methodology as developed in the Bernheim’s Manual. I am discussing there both the definition of history, the stages of the historian's work concerning the historical source analysis and the very core of the Bernheim’s historical method. I am also dealing with his ideas concerning popular in his times concepts of the laws of history, and thus also part of the theory of positivism. Among the topics touched in his work was also the issue concerning the problem of constructing the concepts in history, and that of historical fact. In the third chapter I made an attempt to formulate a general concept of the presented in the work of Bernheim theory of Auffassung, pointing to its originality. The fourth chapter explains what is the idea of a historical interpretation as presented in the Lehrbuch. The fifth chapter presents the concepts of general factors, which make possible the historical reconstruction. I called them out of the sources factors, because they do not come from an analysis of source material. The sixth chapter is devoted to discussing the specifical problems of historical reconstruction, conducted by Bernheim in his analysis of Vita Brunonis by Ruotger.
