Abstract
Język jest jedną z najważniejszych cech każdego narodu. Badania nad językiem i literaturą były istotnym elementem procesów narodotwórczych w Europie Środkowej w XIX w., o czym pisali m.in. Miroslav Hroch, Józef Chlebowczyk i Roman Szul. Przed- stawione przez wspomnianych badaczy modele teoretyczne mają zastosowanie w obser- wowanych od lat 90. XX w. regionalnych ruchach etnicznych. Zauważyć można wiele podobieństw między rozwojem nowszych i starszych języków, takich jak kaszubski czy rusiński. Artyści i naukowcy, pracując nad literaturą, gramatyką i słownikami, starają się doprowadzić do kodyfikacji i standaryzacji nowych języków. Następnym krokiem są dzia- łania polityczne związane ze statusem języka oraz jego obecnością w szkolnych progra- mach nauczania. Niemniej jednak, należy pamiętać, że tak jak nie każda grupa etniczna przekształca się w naród, tak nie każdy dialekt/język ewoluuje w ten sam sposób i osiąga najwyższy stopień rozwoju.

Abstact (The Role of Language in Nation-building within Central Europe). Language is one of the most important features of each nation. Research on the language and litera- ture, described by many scholars, e.g. Miroslav Hroch, Józef Chlebowczyk or recently Roman Szul, was a significant element of the nation-building process in Central Europe in the 19th century. Theoretical models presented by the aforementioned can be also used in contemporary ethnoregional movements which can be observed since the 1990s. There are many similarities between the development of older and newer languages like Kashubian and Rusyn. Artists and scholars create literature, grammar and dictionaries, trying to make new languages codified and standardized. The next step is to put forward political claims including the presence of a language in school curricula and its official status. However, bearing in mind that not every ethnic group is to be transformed in a nation, not every dialect/language evolves in the same way and reaches the highest level of development either.
