Philosophical approach to metrological conflicts in the evaluation of science
Abstract
Celem niniejszej rozprawy doktorskiej jest zbadanie warunków możliwości myślenia o ewaluacji nauki przez pryzmat konstytuujących ją konfliktów metrologicznych. Argument rozwija się zgodnie z tezą, że miary produkcji naukowej nie są po prostu czymś narzuconym z góry lub zastanym, ale ich kształt jest wynikiem konfliktów, które toczą się o ich kontrolę. Ten argument jest następnie rozwijany w czterech rozdziałach. Głównym zadaniem Rozdziału 1 jest określenie relacji między miarą a polityką w historii filozofii zachodniej. W toku tej analizy na pierwszy plan wyłania się tendencja, zgodnie z którą relacja między miarą a partykularnością, rozumianą jako dziedzina konfliktu, stopniowo się zaciera. W związku z tym, proces uniwersalizacji miar wyłaniający się z Rozdziału 1 staje się głównym tematem rozważań w Rozdziale 2. Natomiast w celu analizy tego procesu rozdział skupia się na programie metrologii historycznej Witolda Kuli. Jeśli pierwsze dwa rozdziały stanowią ogólne ramy do analizy konfliktu metrologicznego w jego nowoczesnej postaci, to zadaniem dwóch kolejnych jest natomiast przełożenie tych ogólnych ram na rzeczywistość konfliktów metrologicznych w sektorze nauki. W podsumowania całości dotychczasowe rozważania zostają przedstawione w formie zrębu programu badań konfliktów metrologicznych w obszarze ewaluacji naukowej. Głównym zadaniem tego programu jest obnażanie partykularyzmów stojących za deklarowanym uniwersalnym wymiarem miar, a tym samym wydobycie na pierwszy plan konfliktu.
This dissertation aims to examine the conditions of possibility for thinking about the evaluation of science through the prism of the metrological conflicts that constitute it. The argument develops in accordance with the thesis, that measures of scientific production are not simply something given, but the shape they take is the result of conflicts around them. In the Chapter 1 the main object of the inquiry is to establish a relationship between the measure and politics in the history of Western philosophy. The chapter focuses on the emerging tendency according to which the relationship between the measure and particularity, understood as domain of conflict, becomes more and more blurred. Accordingly, the process of universalization emerging from Chapter 1 becomes the main subject in Chapter 2. For this purpose, this chapter revisits Witold Kula’s historical metrology, in which the gradual process of universalization of measures is understood as the disappearance of metrological conflicts. If the first two chapters provide a general framework for analysing metrological conflict in its modern form, the task of two following chapters is to translate this framework into the reality of metrological conflicts within the science sector. Finally, the conclusions part of this dissertation summarizes the previous considerations, giving them the form of a research program for studying metrological conflicts in the evaluation of science. The main task of this program is defined as unravelling the particularisms behind the declared universal dimension of measures and, thus, bringing the conflict behind this process to the fore.
