"Kronika paryska" by Zofia Węgierska. A Study of the History of Romantic Literary, Theater and Art Criticism
Abstract
Rozprawa doktorska traktuje o zawartości treściowej i stylistyce artykułów prasowych Zofii Węgierskiej dotyczących kultury francuskiej w latach 1853-1869, publikowanych na łamach różnych czasopism, przede wszystkim w periodyku „Biblioteka Warszawska”. Do głównych celów dysertacji należy zestawienie poglądów korespondentki z XIX-wieczną krytyką i sztuką polską oraz francuską. Praca została podzielona na cztery rozdziały, wprowadzenie oraz podsumowanie. Pierwszy zawiera uwagi na temat teorii i praktyki krytycznej autorki „Kroniki paryskiej” w porównaniu do dorobku Charlesa-Augustina Sainte-Beuve’a, Jules’a Janina oraz Théophile’a Gautiera. Drugi rozdział poświęcono refleksji na temat powieści realistycznej w kontekście polskiego „sporu o powieść”. W kolejnym rozdziale znajdują się komentarze na temat stosunku Węgierskiej do poezji francuskiej w XIX wieku, natomiast czwarty otwarty został rekonstrukcją doświadczeń z wizyt polskiej felietonistki w teatrach w okresie poprzedzającym jej wyjazd do Paryża, aby przejść do równoległej lektury jej tekstów prasowych oraz francuskiej krytyki teatralnej tego czasu. W podsumowaniu szczególną uwagę poświęcono opiniom Węgierskiej o francuskim i polskim malarstwie oraz zbieżnościom tej krytyki z myślą polskich publicystów.
The dissertation investigates the subject matter and style of Zofia Węgierska's press articles concerning French culture from 1853 to 1869, published in various journals, especially the “Biblioteka Warszawska” periodical. One of the main aims of the dissertation is to juxtapose the correspondent's opinions with Polish and French criticism and art of the 19th century. The study is divided into four chapters, an introduction and a summary. The first chapter discusses comments concerning Węgierska’s critical theory and practice compared to the works of Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve, Jules Janin and Théophile Gautier. The second chapter is dedicated to reflection on the realistic novel in the context of the Polish “dispute over the novel”. The third chapter includes comments on Węgierska’s attitude towards French poetry in the 19th century, whereas the fourth and final chapter opens with a reconstruction of the Polish columnist’s experiences in theatres prior to her emigration to Paris, in order to proceed to a parallel reading of her press texts and the French theatre critique of that period. In the summary, particular attention is focused on Węgierska’s opinion on French and Polish painting and the convergence of her criticism with the ideas of Polish journalists.
