Between romanticism and biedermeier. The changes of literary consciousness in Poland and Germany in the 19th century
Abstract
Osią rozważań jest wskazanie paralelizmu
sytuacji ruchu narodowego, a także procesu
historycznoliterackiego w Polsce i w Niemczech
w 1. połowie XIX w. Oba społeczeństwa (przy
wszystkich różnicach) znajdowały się jeszcze w
przedindustrialnej fazie rozwoju. W obu
społeczeństwach dominowały jeszcze reguły
porządku stanowego, a literatura musiała
określić się wobec skrajnego dylematu: albo
wprzęgnąć się w zadania rewolucyjnej
emancypacji społecznej, negującej tradycyjne
role literatury i ideały estetyczne oraz
wieszczącej zwrot w stronę nowych gatunków
literatury agitacyjnej i żurnalistycznej, albo też –
to przeciwstawny wariant - wystąpić w imię
ideałów społeczeństwa stanowego oraz
klasycznej triady piękna, miłości i dobra w sferze ideałów estetycznych. Dramatyzm tej
alternatywy staje się w pełni zrozumiały na tle
gwałtownych przemian rynku literackiego,
umasowienia odbiorcy, ekspansji form
dziennikarskich i pojawiających się w okresie
rewolucji lipcowej haseł „końca epoki sztuki”.
Zagadnienia te rozważam m.in. na
przykładach z zakresu krytyki literackiej
(rozprawa Mochnackiego „O rewolucji w
Niemczech”, tekst Juliana Klaczki o Heinem), w
analizach powieści Kraszewskiego i studium
Kraszewskiego o Hipolicie Cegielskim. Ważną
inspiracją całego wywodu jest monografia
Friedricha Senglego „Biedermeierzeit” i
niemiecka tradycja badań nad biedermeierem
literackim.
The main axis of the considerations are the illustration of the parallelisms of the Polish and German national movements and the literary and historical process in both countries in the first half of the 19th century. Despite all the differences both Polish and German societes were in the preindustrial phase. The rules of estate-based societes were still dominating in both countries, and the literature had to define itself facing the extreme dilemma; namely: enroll in a revolutionary social emancipation which negates a traditional role of literature and aesthetic ideals or support the turn towards new agitational and journalistic genres or, the contrastive alternative, represent state ideals and the classical trial of beauty, love and good in the sphere of aestethic ideals. The drama of this alternative becomes completely understandable taking into account rapid changes of a literary market, mass audience, the expansion of journalistic forms and mottos suggesting the end of art period during July revolusion. I examine these issues on the basis of the examples from literary critics (for instance, Mochnacki "O rewolucji w Niemczech”, the text of Julian Klaczka about Heine), analyses of Kraszewski novel and Kraszewski study on Hipolit Cegielski. The crucial inspiration of the whole examination is the monography of Friedrich Sengle „Biedermeierzeit” and the German examination tradition of the issue of biedermeier literary.
