Symbols at work. Academic contexts of the symbolic approach in anthropology
Abstract
Niniejsza publikacja podejmuje problem, który jest dla antropologii symbolicznej fundamentalny. Jest nim ukazanie tego, jak w ramach tego kierunku ujmowano kwestię działań o charakterze symbolicznym oraz tego, jak działają same symbole w kulturze. Równie istotnym problemem wiążącym się ze sposobem pojmowania przez ten nurt powyższych kwestii jest jego uwarunkowanie kontekstualne. Chodzi w tym miejscu nie tylko o źródła naukowych inspiracji, ale również o mniej oczywiste czynniki kształtujące teoretyczne stanowiska Geertza czy Turnera. Antropologia symboliczna stanowiła część paradygmatu interpretacyjnego. To właśnie wpływ wiążącego się ze zwrotem interpretacyjnym klimatu intelektualnego, jak też instytucjonalne oddziaływanie wspomnianych powyżej ośrodków akademickich jest najbardziej interesujące. Historyczno-naukowa kontekstualizacja określonych prądów naukowych wywiera wpływ na kształt realizowanych w ich ramach teorii w takim samym stopniu, co relacje pomiędzy stanowiskami poszczególnych badaczy i ich autorskie programy antropologiczne.
The problem of the academic context was undertaken in this work. It surrounds one of the most influential modern approaches in cultural anthropology – symbolic anthropology. This field of research developed at the beginning of the 70s of the 20th century and, in the beginning, it was treated as an expression of critique of methods of structuralism, but in the course of time it gained the status of an autonomous perspective within the anthropological current. A division seen within this current into the British and American approaches, is a distinct reflection of the definite research traditions and of the specific academic context which contributed to the internal differentiation of the theoretical foundations of this approach. In this book an attempt was made to reconstruct the range of intellectual sources, the theoretical-methodological field of the workshop and institutional relations thanks to which studies of such researchers as Clifford Geertz or Victor Turner significantly differed on many levels from one another, but in many respects they showed an interest common to all of them in the questions of meaning, process of symbolization and cultural metaphorics. The purpose of putting the American version, best represented by Clifford Geertz, for comparison with the British approach of the so called Manchester School and Victor Turner is to indicate not so much the deep stratification of the search of cultural solutions by symbolic anthropologists, but rather to indicate the broad research horizon of this current. Let’s add, the horizon which distinctly was a peculiar intellectual continuity within the “interpretative turn” occurring in those years in the world humanities.
