The experience of endometriosis as a chronic illness in the biographies of female students
Abstract
Endometrioza jest nieuleczalną chorobą przewlekłą, która dotyka w Polsce około 2 milionów dziewcząt i kobiet, a na świecie ok. 180 milionów osób. Endometrioza występuje w czasie realizacji głównych zadań rozwojowych „wschodzącej dorosłości” i dokonywaniu kluczowych wyborów życiowych. Celem pracy doktorskiej jest przedstawienie doświadczania endometriozy jako choroby przewlekłej w kontekście trajektorii chorowania w biografiach młodych kobiet, percepcji siebie w różnych rolach społecznych oraz funkcjonowania na co dzień w mikro-, mezo-, egzo- i makrostrukturach społecznych. Aby tego dokonać, zbadano metodą narracyjno-biograficzną 23 studentki, u których zdiagnozowano endometriozę. Praca składa się z czterech części: teoretycznej, metodologicznej analizy wyników badań własnych oraz rekomendacji. Warto zaznaczyć, iż doświadczenie choroby determinowało ich ścieżkę kształcenia oraz kariery zawodowej. Wskazano również wpływ endometriozy na percepcję siebie w rolach społecznych, poczucia własnej atrakcyjności, kobiecości i seksualności oraz wystąpienie zaburzeń w sferze psychicznej. Ponadto choroba odmieniała jakość relacji rodzinnych oraz interpersonalnych. W dysertacji sformułowano również potrzeby, problemy, oczekiwania, postulaty oraz luki w systemie opieki zdrowotnej i wsparcia osób chorych na endometriozę w Polsce.
Endometriosis is an incurable chronic disease that affects around 2 million girls and women in Poland, and approximately 180 million individuals worldwide. It occurs during the realization of the main developmental tasks of 'emerging adulthood' and involving pivotal life choices. The aim of the doctoral thesis is to present the experience of endometriosis as a chronic disease in the context of illness trajectories within the biographies of young women, self-perception in various social roles, and daily functioning within micro-, meso-, exo-, and macrosocial structures. To achieve this, a narrative-biographical method was used to examine 23 female students diagnosed with endometriosis. The thesis consists of four parts: theoretical, methodological, analysis of research results, and recommendations. It's worth mentioning that the experience of the disease determined their educational path and professional career. The impact of endometriosis on self-perception in social roles, feelings of self-attractiveness, femininity, and sexuality was also indicated, along with the occurrence of psychological disturbances. Furthermore, the illness also altered the quality of family and interpersonal relationships. The dissertation also formulated needs, issues, expectations, demands, and gaps in the healthcare and support system for individuals with endometriosis in Poland.
