Item Zeitschriften als Raum der Zirkulation. Das Osteuropa-Programm im Merkur. Deutsche Zeitschrift für europäisches Denken(Springer, 2023-05-05) Zajas, PawełFirst published in 1947 in what was then the French occupation zone, the German periodical Merkur. Deutsche Zeitschrift für europäisches Denken has played a crucial role in shaping the intellectual landscape not only of Germany, but of Europe as a whole. Since its foundation amidst rising tensions between East and West, the journal has regularly published translations from nearly all European, American, and Asian literatures, adding ample commentary and paratexts. The present paper is devoted to the dynamics of translation as they become manifest in the East European literatures published by Merkur. The analysis focuses on the following factors: 1) the research potential of the editorial archive and the influence of social factors on the circulation of literary texts; 2) the political-cultural potential of the journal; 3) Merkur’s place in the transnational field; 4) the economic and programmatic role of cooperating periodicals; and 5) the functions of mediators and translators within the framework of politicized importation of East European literature.Item Literaturbetrieb der DDR und der europäische Ostblock. The study focuses on memoirs by experienced writers, consciously deploying in their texts a number of literary, visual and paratextual devices. The aim is to illuminate the ways in which they make sense of their experience and how they endow it with a particular narrative shape, with special focus on the implicit and explicit ideological baggage of the memoirs. An important aspect of the project is the critical reflection on the nature of memory that emerges from the selected texts in connection with both individual and collective history. Special focus falls on configurations of gender and race/ethnicity in the contexts of the two multicultural North American societies, and their influence on the process of self-fashioning.Item The self and the world. So far it has been assumed that non-native sound perception is based on assimilation to the first language categories or new category formation. The present book hypothesizes that also individual phonetic features, which the learner is familiar with, and the lack of reaction to unknown features play a role in speech perception. The first study is a longitudinal English vowel perception study which examines which features ease perception development. Studies two and three examine whether and, if so, to what extent, the phonetic features known from the L2 and L3 influence non-native perception. It is tested how the learners of English, French and Dutch perceive Dutch and Turkish vowels. The studies have confirmed the main impact of categories, which act as magnets, but they have also shown the role and the hierarchy of phonetic features in non-native vowel perception.Item The L1 as a consciousness-raising tool in learning L2 grammar(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2019-02) Wach, AleksandraThe main aim of the book is to investigate the facilitative role of learners’ native language (L1) in raising their consciousness of foreign language (L2) grammatical structures. The literature review focuses on selected second language acquisition theories which explain the role of the different conceptualizations of consciousness in L2 learning, on the position of grammar in contemporary L2 pedagogy, with special regard to grammatical consciousness-raising, and on theoretical and empirical perspectives on the functions of learners’ L1 in L2 learning and teaching. The empirical part of the book presents the methodology and results of a mixed-methods study conducted on low-proficiency adult learners of L2 English with the aim of exploring the role of their L1 (Polish) in promoting the noticing, understanding, and explicit knowledge of L2 grammatical structures. The results revealed a number of significant functions of the L1 in enhancing the participants’ consciousness of the targeted structures, evidenced in the use of mental strategies (i.e. translation, cross-linguistic comparisons, making inferences, metalinguistic reasoning, etc.), in the results of tests, and in opinions expressed in debriefing interviews.Item Blink of an Eye: Material Nature Captured in the Momentary Now. A radical 1st person perspective(Wydział Anglistyki UAM, 2019-01-17) Holbrook, DwightBlurring the border between science and the humanities, this book scrutinizes the relation between material nature and ourselves, doing so by means of a 1st person approach to time. It takes as primordial starting point the now’s immediacy – that is, the experiential immediacy of one’s awakenness to, and contact with, the world and our surroundings, a momentness of time that matches and aligns with the immediate presentness of the world we’re in touch with and lucidly aware of. The primordiality of such alignment of time is brought out by the fact that without it there could be no communication, no con-temporaneous society, no knowledge, all of which hinge on this synchronicity of immediate time. Such a perspective entails the overturning of the all but universal bedrock presumption of sequential time, the before and after of extended time. Instead of the transient present resting precariously on the foundational notion of an ordered, sequential time that provides for causal sequence, for chronologies, and for a past “in” the past and a future “in” the future, in the schema advanced in this book it is the past and future that perch precariously on the present – the immediate present being not the present effect of a cause but the present beginning that other notions of time are predicated on. In other words, the notion of time – as this book proposes it – is turned upside down. One might compare such a proposal to that of attempting a detour around the observational bias of searching for keys where the street light is shining, that locality being in this case 3rd person and data-compatible description – the measurable, the countable, the sequential. Każdy rozdział omawia wybrane praktyczne aspekty związane z funkcjonowaniem na rynku tłumaczeń, zasadami wykonywania tłumaczeń specjalistycznych, zarządzaniem terminologią, zakresem kompetencji tłumacza ustnego i nieustannym samorozwojem, narzędziami wspomagającymi tłumaczenie i szczególnym przypadkiem pracy tłumacza jako audiodeskryptora. Główne przesłanie książki to przekonanie czytelnika, że tłumaczenie jest złożonym procesem i zawodem, który wymaga szeregu umiejętności i odpowiedniej postawy etycznej. Jakość usług na rynku tłumaczeń w Polsce może ulec poprawie tylko poprzez kształcenie dobrze przygotowanych do tej szczególnej pracy tłumaczy, którzy są świadomi, że jakość ich pracy wpływa na relacje pomiędzy jednostkami, firmami i narodami.Item Are abstract concepts like dinosaur feathers?(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2014) Jelec, AnnaItem Ordering paradoxes in a cross-categorial paradigm: on syncretisms with the declarative complementizer(Webschrift for Michal Starke's 50th birthday uploaded on LingBuzz, 2018-05-01) Wiland, BartoszThis paper shows that incorporating non-definite demonstratives into the same fseq which covers syncretisms with the declarative complementizer, discussed in Baunaz and Lander’s (2018a) work, is necessary to explain syncretic alignment and morphological containment in such paradigms in a systematic way. The paper also resolves an apparent *ABA violation in such a paradigm in Basaá, a language which shows syncretism between the demonstrative and the relativizer to the exclusion of the declarative complementizer.Item (R)evolution in the perception of history, national identity and nature in the contemporary Anglo-Guyanese novel(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2016) Frątczak, MartaMonografia jest w całości poświęcona powieści gujańskiej pisanej w języku angielskim, która nadal jest mało znanym, zarówno w Polsce, jak i na świecie, dyskursem literackim. Wyodrębnia ona powieść tę jako samodzielny i intrygujący przykład powieściopisarstwa wśród innych literatur karaibskich i śledzi jego ewolucję na przestrzeni ostatnich sześćdziesięciu lat. Książka skupia się przede wszystkim na zmianach w gujańskim postrzeganiu historii, tożsamości narodowej i natury oraz znaczeniu powieści dla kształtowania tożsamości karaibskiej i tożsamości narodowych w regionie. Przeprowadzone analizy literackie wpisane są w szerokie tło teoretyczne (studia postkolonialne i ekokrytyczne) oraz kulturalno-społeczne konteksty współczesnych Karaibów.Item Przestrzeń intertekstualna i geohistoryczna w powieściach André P. Brinka(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2016) Stachura, NataliaMonografia przybliża wybrane zagadnienia poetologiczne w pisarstwie André P. Brinka na przestrzeni ostatniego półwiecza, a zarazem przybliża polskiemu odbiorcy szerszy kontekst literatury południowoafrykańskiej, zwłaszcza afrikaansjęzycznej. Kluczowym zagadnieniem jest twórcze wplecenie przez Brinka rodzimej tradycji literackiej w debaty polityczno-społeczne toczące się w RPA doby apartheidu i po demokratycznym przełomie w 1994 roku. Podejmując dialog z kanonicznym gatunkiem literackim, jakim jest powieść farmerska, plaasroman, pisarz w każdej kolejnej dekadzie wzbogacił go o nowe możliwości odczytań, zarazem zaszczepiając lub ugruntowując na gruncie literatury afrikaansjęzycznej poetykę powieści gotyckiej, pisarstwa feministycznego, nowego historyzmu i postkolonializmu. Analiza czterech wybranych powieści z czterech dekad pozwala prześledzić ewolucję pisarską samego Brinka oraz zmiany zachodzące w literaturze południowoafrykańskiej, zmagającej się zarówno z traumą kolonializmu i apartheidu, jak i z wyzwaniami stawianymi przez nową, słabo ugruntowaną demokrację. Książka stanowić ma wprowadzenie i komentarz do pisarstwa Brinka i do nowszej literatury południowoafrykańskiej.Item The early modern (re)discovery of “overhuman” potential: Marlowe’s and Shakespeare’s over-reachers in the light of Nietzsche’s philosophy(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2016) Burzyńska, KatarzynaGłównym celem pracy jest analiza wybranych bohaterów dramatów Williama Szekspira i Krzysztofa Marlowe’a w świetle kluczowych koncepcji filozofii Fryderyka Nietzschego. Analizowane postaci, określane w języku angielskim jako „overreachers” charakteryzują się wyjątkowo silną ambicją i niejednokrotnie bezkompromisowo dążą do władzy i panowania. Ta analogia staje się punktem wyjścia do reinterpretacji „nadczłowieczego” potencjału w angielskim dramacie renesansowym, a także przyczynkiem do ogólniejszej refleksji na temat tożsamości człowieka renesansu. Połączenie nietzscheanizmu ze studiami nad angielskim dramatem siedemnastowiecznym jest niewątpliwie niszą badawczą, gdyż do tej pory nietzscheanizm nie stanowił narzędzia metodologicznego w dyskusji nad tożsamością człowieka odrodzenia. Zatem wykorzystanie potencjału filozoficznego nietzscheanizmu służy zarówno próbie odczytania na nowo pojęcia jednostkowości człowieka renesansu, jak również praktycznemu wykorzystaniu refleksji niemieckiego filozofa w interpretacji literackiej.Item Tussentaal en het linguïstische beeld van de dagelijkse realiteit in Vlaanderen Op basis van Vlaamse films (2000-2010)(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2016) Wiercińska, KatarzynaNiniejsza publikacja podejmuje próbę przybliżenia językowego obrazu flamandzkiej rzeczywistości dnia codziennego z punktu widzenia struktur językowych typowych dla tussentaal (ndl. tussen – między + taal – język), mówionej odmiany języka niderlandzkiego używanej w codziennej komunikacji we Flandrii. Badanie, na potrzeby którego zestawiono korpus dziesięciu filmów (prawie 18 godzin nagrań, ok. 83.000 słów), skupia się na poszukiwaniu językowych wykładników flamandzkiej rzeczywistości dnia codziennego. Na podstawie filmowych dialogów podejmuje się próbę wyekscerpowania tych cech tussentaal, które budują obraz rzeczywistości lub za pomocą których mówca modeluje rzeczywistość wedle swoich potrzeb. Perspektywą badawczą prezentowanej rozprawy jest językowy obraz świata zawarty w strukturach językowych tussentaal.Item Signposts and menus in monolingual dictionaries for learners of English(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2015) Ptasznik, BartoszGłówną funkcją wskaźników semantycznych (umieszczonych na początku znaczeń) oraz menu hasła (umieszczonych na górze haseł) w nawigacji haseł słownikowych jest zmniejszenie czasu konsultacji haseł oraz poprawienie skuteczności wyboru znaczeń. Dotychczasowe badania wskazują na wyższą skuteczność wskaźników semantycznych. Jednakże nie wiadomo jeszcze, czy połączenie wskaźników semantycznych i menu hasła w pojedynczym artykule hasłowym może podnieść skuteczność wyboru poprawnych znaczeń wyrazów oraz przyspieszyć ten proces w porównaniu do haseł wyposażonych tylko w jeden typ elementów wspomagających nawigację – wskaźniki semantyczne. Książka podejmuje próbę przeanalizowania różnicy pomiędzy wskaźnikami semantycznymi a połączeniem wskaźników semantycznych i menu hasła w pojedynczym haśle słownikowym.Item Aspects of morphosyntactic constraints on quantification in English and Polish(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2016) Dziubała-Szrejbrowska, DominikaThe topic of dissertation “Aspects of morphosyntactic constraints on quantification in English and Polish” is numerals and lexemes expressing quantity such as many, much, a few/little, several/a few functioning as modifiers in nominal phrases in English and Polish. The subject matter analyzed in the present work is syntax of nominal phrases containing quantifiers within a generative grammar, more specifically in the recent permutations of generative model as discussed by Chomsky (1995, 2001), and according to a novel approach to grammar, i.e. nanosyntax, as introduced by Starke (2009); Caha (2009, 2010 ) or Taraldsen (2009). The major aspect of this work is the structure of nominal phrases containing quantifiers as well as the mechanism of case distribution within a phrase based on the theory of movement together with the assumption that the smallest building block is not a morpheme, as it has been the case in various generative approaches, but a feature. What follows, elements in phrases occurring in positions to which structural cases, i.e. Nominative and Accusative, or oblique cases, i.e. and Genitive or Dative etc. are assigned, move to the position within a maximal projection of a given Case. The proposed model seems to provide tools to explain the homogenous and heterogeneous syntax of numerals, the intricate patterns of case marking of modifiers in a pre-numeral and pre-nominal position as well as signals new avenues to explore in the syntax of agreement with quantified subjects.Item Functional sequence zones and Slavic L>T>N participles (preprint)(New York: Oxford University Press, 2018) Taraldsen Medova, Lucie; Wiland, BartoszWe make a case for morphemes as zones of functional sequence (‘fseq zones’) in Nanosyntax. Under such an approach, morphemes which compete for insertion with each other form the same fseq zone, while morphemes which co-occur together form different fseq zones. We illustrate this on the basis of the participle zone that is projected on top of verb stems in Slavic languages. We argue that in Polish and Czech, this participle zone spells out as L, T, or N, depending on its size and internal constituent structure. The constituent structure of this zone provides a direct solution to the long-standing puzzle in Polish and Czech morphology, namely why only unaccusative verbs built adjectival L-passives while all types of verbs build active L-participles.Item Kompetencje tłumacza ustnego(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2016) Korpal, PawełZawód tłumacza ustnego powszechnie uznawany jest za stresujący, a tłumaczenie symultaniczne – za jeden z najbardziej złożonych procesów językowych (Christoffels i de Groot 2005). Nie ulega wątpliwości, że język jest narzędziem pracy tłumacza i kompetencje językowe stanowią podstawowe kryterium kwalifikujące daną osobę do wykonywania tego zawodu. Wydaje się jednak, że na sukces zawodowy tłumacza mogą mieć wpływ również inne czynniki. Oprócz doskonałej znajomości co najmniej dwóch języków (języka ojczystego i języka obcego) oraz wypracowanego warsztatu tłumaczeniowego, tłumaczy mogą cechować pewne właściwości psychiczne, interpersonalne oraz zdolności poznawcze, ułatwiające wykonywanie tego zawodu. W związku z tym, że tłumacz jest wykonawcą zleconej usługi, nie bez znaczenia mogą być również jego kompetencje biznesowe (np. prowadzenie negocjacji) i asertywność. Celem niniejszego rozdziału jest omówienie następujących grup kompetencji tłumacza ustnego: językowych, poznawczych, psychologicznych, społeczno-kulturowych oraz biznesowych.Item Forgetful Recollections: Images of Central and Eastern Europe in Canadian Literature(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2014) Drewniak, DagmaraThe present study is an attempt to explore the position of the memory and postmemory of Central and Eastern Europe in contemporary Canadian literature. The analysis is inspired by Simona Škrabec’s concept of the 20th century Central Europe seen as diverse and evolving “space of dispersion.” In this context, the book situates the novels and memoirs, published in Canada at the turn of the 20th and 21st century and written by immigrants and their descendants from Central and Eastern Europe, as the texts which try to recreate the images of 'Old Places' filtered through the experience of living in transcultural Canada. The analyses of the selected texts by Janice Kulyk Keefer, Lisa Appignanesi, Irena F. Karafilly, Anne Michaels, Norman Ravvin, and Eva Stachniak are predominantly based on Marianne Hirsch’s idea of “postmemory” and Pierre Nora’s “lieux de mémoire". These two concepts capture the broad spectrum of attitudes to the past, remembering and forgetting, and sites of memory as exemplified in the discussed texts. While all of the chosen novels and memoirs explore the problem of post/memory and un/belonging caused by immigration, poverty, and the trauma of World War Π, they try to address the question of identity of immigrants (or their descendants) created on the border between the memory and postmemory of the past and the contemporary reality of transcultural Canada. As a result of this, the post/memory and the recreated after/images of Central and Eastern Europe offer both therapy and consolation as well as testimony to the past and its sites of memory.Item Genre and literacies: Historical (socio)pragmatics of the 1820 settler petition(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2016) Włodarczyk, MatyldaIn the history of English, the Late Modern period offers a chance to observe rapid developments in petitioning practices as growing literacy rates open up potential access to the contemporary models of written request-making. Still the nature of Late Modern literacies complicates the attempts at written composition and participation in literacy cultures. In addition, spatial and social mobility that characterise European communities in the period not only generate more demand for active literacy, but also entail new factors, expectations and constraints on written communication. Thus the ways in which the Late Modern literacies may be elucidated and accessed through the study of petitions remain at the core of this investigation. The book embarks upon a (socio)pragmatic study of two sets of institutional correspondence surviving in connection to the British government colonisation scheme of the Cape of Good Hope, the 1820 settlement. The data, referred to as the candidate (1819) and colonial collections (1820-25), offer a unique opportunity to observe genre development over a relatively short span of time, to identify the specific aspects of genre change and to connect these to the discourse and language external context. The study focuses on the structural models of petition and issues of authorship, as well as variability of punctuation and aspects of spelling and morpho-syntax in the letters. The analysis makes use of specific digital methodologies, such as the n-gram analysis, as well as purely qualitative methods.
