    The human communication orders and the principle of natural language sustainability

    As communicating agents, humans have always functioned in the predominantly bi-modal communicative design. The design’s architecture includes the anatomical structures of the audio-vocal modality, referred to here as the audio-vocal subdesign (hence AVO), and the anatomical structures of the visual-tactile manual modality, referred to here as the visual-tactile manual subdesign (hence VIT), respectively. The two subdesigns have always co-occurred and cooperated closely in acts of human communication. This fact has been reported time and again in ample pertinent literature (cf. Armstrong et al., 1995; Corballis, 2002; De Ruiter, 2000; Dray and McNeill, 1990; Duranti and Goodwin, 1992; Johnson, 1987; Kendon, 1972; Kita, 2000; Levelt, 1989; Mayberry and Jaques, 2000; McNeill, 1992, 2005; Nobe, 1996, to name but a few selected sources). The evident interrelationship in the use of the two modalities does, in fact, demonstrate a close integration of the two subdesigns which has been artistically and quite inadvertently captured by Leonardo Da Vinci in his famous Vitruvian Man. The figure may thus be thought of as representing in the most elegant and most precise way the postulated and real synchrony of the two subdesigns in human communicative practice. In the figure which is reproduced below (nr 1), the thick horizontal black line, inserted by the present author, separates the bimodal complex of the said subdesigns from the rest of the human body. In the present account, the bimodal complex of the originally tool-free and thus ear-centred audio-vocal and of the visual-tactile and thus manual-centred subdesigns is assumed to constitute the primary human communication order based on the mouth-ear-hand coordinates It is referred to as the natural human communication order (hence abbreviated as NHCO). The order has persisted from time immemorial until the occurrence of its extension by the augmentation of the hand with the tools, such as the drumstick and various writing devices (e.g. initially sticks, stones, bones, and later pens). It is at this point of human history that the ‘augmented’ human communication orders (abbreviated as AHCO), based on the culture-determined engineering of the mouth-ear-hand coordinates, have emerged. In what follows, a brief discussion is offered concerning the evolution of the human communication orders.

    The gender congruency effect in sentence context depends on gender transparency and L2 proficiency: A self-paced reading study with Polish–German bilinguals

    Aims and objectives: The gender congruency effect, and so the facilitated retrieval of grammatical gender for translation equivalents of the same gender, has been documented in the recognition of isolated words in L2. Our study investigates whether this effect extends to word recognition in sentence context and whether it is modulated by gender transparency and L2 proficiency. Design/methodology/approach: Sixty late unbalanced Polish–German bilinguals completed a self-paced reading task with noun phrases manipulated for lexical gender congruency with L1 (congruent, incongruent) and noun-internal gender transparency in L2 (transparent, non-transparent). L2 proficiency was assessed through the Dialang test. Data and analysis: Reading times on the noun were analysed by means of linear mixed-effects modelling. Findings/conclusion: Results showed a gender congruency effect that was limited to transparent nouns and which was greater at lower L2 proficiency levels. Originality: The study is the first to investigate the gender congruency effect in the recognition of nouns embedded in grammatical sentences. Significance/implications: The study shows that the presence of a contextualising sentence does not eliminate the cross-language effects of grammatical gender. Furthermore, it provides first evidence that individual noun-internal gender cues modulate the gender congruency effect. The findings are discussed in terms of the relationship between gender transparency at the micro-level and the degree of activation of gender values.

    L’image de la femme-fleur dans les « prosimètres botaniques » de Louis Bernard de Montbrison et de Dargassies [preprint]

    Cet article examine l'image de la femme-fleur dans les Lettres à Madame de C** sur la botanique et sur quelquessujets de physique et d'histoire naturelle (1802) de Louis Bernard de Montbrison, et Lettres à Anaïs sur la botanique (1825) de Dargassies. Les deux ouvragesjouent des ambiguïtésengendrées par, d'une part, l'analogie que les auteurs cherchent à établir entre la femme et la fleur, et, de l'autre, la représentation de la fleur en tant qu'organe de reproduction sexuée. L'étudedégage les traits majeurs de ce portrait "végétal" de la femme et met enévidencesacomplexité.

    The role of noun termination in grammatical gender assignment in Polish: A psycholinguistic study

    Previous research has shown that speakers of a variety of languages benefit from formal gender cues, e.g. word ending, when assigning grammatical gender to nouns. However, the extent to which Polish speakers compute gender based on such cues has not yet been examined. Therefore, the goal of this study was to investigate the role of noun termination in gender assignment in Polish on psycholinguistic grounds. The paper reports on a timed Gender Decision Task which was carried out with 24 adult native speakers of Polish. Participants responded significantly faster to gender-transparent than to gender-opaque feminine nouns. However, no effect of noun termination was observed for masculine and neuter nouns. The results provide psycholinguistic evidence that the ending -a constitutes the strongest gender cue that Polish speakers can depend on when assigning gender to nouns, arguably because it is the only noun ending that shows high availability and reliability in parallel.

    „Der Triumph der Vegetation ist total“ – eine Re-Lektüre von Michel Houellebecqs "La carte et le territoire" aus humanökologischer Perspektive

    Der Beitrag geht den in Karte und Gebiet (2010) von Houellebecq entfalteten Wirkungszusammenhängen zwischen dem Menschen und seiner natürlichen Umwelt nach. Diese werden anhand der visuellen Künste verhandelt. Die Gemälde und Fotografien des Künstlers Jed Martin werden zu Schauräumen, die den Ort des Menschen im natur-kulturellen Ganzen reflektieren und dabei eine Verschiebung der Agency vom Menschen zur Natur vollziehen. In den letzten fotografischen Installationen wird die Perspektive der Pflanzenwelt eingenommen, welche die Handlungsmacht des Menschen abgelöst hat. Über das Medium der Kunst werden transversale Allianzen, Praktiken und Visionen entworfen, die sich quer zur industriell-technologischen Hybris des Anthropozän stellen. Houellebecqs Roman wird im Kontext der ethischen Debatte über das Anthropozän gelesen.

    Erinnerungsorte des Zweiten Weltkrieges erleben und verstehen: Auf der Suche nach Katalysatoren für Reflexions- und Lernprozesse

    Der vorliegende Artikel versteht sich als ein Beitrag zur Diskussion über die Bedeutung und die Möglichkeiten der Präsentation von historischen Inhalten (insbesondere von sog. Erinnerungsor- ten) im Kontext des Lehrens und Lernens fremder Sprachen. Sein Ziel ist die Reflexion über die Möglichkeiten der Förderung des Interesses von Lernenden sowie über Aktivitäten, die zur Inten- sivierung von ihren Lernprozessen beitragen. Als Beispiel dienen hier zwei Studienfahrten nach Halle (Saale), der Besuch von sich dort befindenden Gedenkstätten (dem ehemaligen Gefängnis Roter Ochse und dem Gertraudenfriedhof), Arbeit mit Dokumenten (darunter mit Gerichtsakten), literarischen Texten und auf historischen Fakten basierenden Spielfilmen.

    Ludic Strategy and Ludological Studies in Glottodidactics – Inspirations, Research and Perspectives

    Ludology, known also as games research and game studies, has gained throughout decades an increasing popularity all around the world among scholars dealing with various ludic activities and researching them from numerous perspectives. Ludologists originate from innumerable disciplines encompassing sciences, social sciences and humanities, among others including linguistics, applied linguistics and glottodidactics. In every country there are to be found outstanding researchers in this field inspiring by their impressive achievements next generations of followers. One of them, in Poland, is Prof. Teresa Siek-Piskozub from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The aim of this article is to present selected examples of the influence of her work on both individual and global academic, educational, organisational and institutional enterprises initiated by scholars conducting research in the field of games and broadly perceived ludic phenomena, as well as educators and practitioners.

    Culture in translation: A comparative analysis of English originals and Polish dubbed versions of computer-animated film productions

    The aim of the research presented in this chapter was to indicate the multiplicity of culture-related references in audio-visual English-Polish translation on the example of a longer form, which is a computer animated film containing humorous elements. The film selected for the analysis is the Polish dubbed version of the American blockbuster from 2004 Shrek 2. The culture-related fragments detected and analysed have been divided into four categories and marked out as: 1) linguistic references (quotations or paraphrases from popular Polish books, films and songs); 2) cultural references (expressions or proper names known and characteristic exclusively of Polish culture); 3) everyday language (popular, colloquial and slang sayings, idiomatic expressions, proverbs, language styled to be archaic and elements of regional dialects); 4) personal references to well known Poles, celebrities and fictional characters. As a result of the analysis undertaken, 90 culture-related film script fragments were detected. Moreover, having been confronted with the original version, in many cases they seem to be much funnier than the original phrases.
