    Szczęśliwe zakończenie poszukiwań. „Kinder-Gartenlaube” jako źródło ilustracji do baśni „O krasnoludkach i o sierotce Marysi”

    The paper aims to present a discovery that entails settlement of the source of illustration employed by Michał Arct in the first edition of Maria Konopnicka’s “O krasnoludkach i o sierotce Marysi“ (Little Orphan Mary and the Gnomes) (Warsaw 1896) that was a German periodical for children “Kinder-Gartenlaube.” In its 11 issues published between 1887 and 1890 the researchers have found every single image that several years later was used in the Warsaw edition. A detailed examination of the illustrations and the texts that accompanied them in their original context allow to state that Konopnicka knew both, and due to diversity of ways to refer to them she proved to have been a master interpreter, a translator and an author of poetic ekphrasis for whom the material delivered by the publisher did not become a limitation, but rather a catalyser of imagination.

    "Pokój – to całkiem dobra zabawa. Może jeszcze lepsza niż wojna!". O "Bitwie o Kozi Dwór" Józefa Hena

    The article attempts to interpret the novel "Bitwa o Kozi Dwór" (1955) from the perspective of space studies. Following the research of Yi-Fu Tuan and Florian Znaniecki, it analyses the experience of war playing as an important ritual for domesticating space and, at the same time, an important event in characters’ biography. Józef Hen’s novel tells the story of a group of children looking for a place to play football in pre-war Warsaw. Kozi Dwór seems to be perfect for this, but the boys from Obozowa play there most often. The two groups fight several times, but eventually join forces to form a football team and defeat boys from richer families in a match. The article proves that the ‘backyard war’ is an initiatory experience at the level of identification with a specific place, conflict resolution or interpersonal relations. Not only does Hen use a well-known theme of chil- dren’s literature, but at the same time tells an autobiographical story. The researcher posits that, as in "Nowolipie Street", the writer recalls a world that vanished during the Second World War, but does not elaborate on its end. The battle of Kozi Dwór, however, is not only a foreshadowing of the tragic fate of this generation, but also a recollection of the Arcadian landscape of childhood, when peacemaking was easier.

    Rodzinny habitus w twórczości Zofii Rogoszówny Obraz domu i rodziny, najczęściej wywodzącej się ze środowiska ziemiańskiego, zajmuje ważne miejsce w twórczości Zofii Rogoszówny. W powieści Dziecinny dwór (1907) pisarka, wykorzystując wspomnienia ze swego dzieciństwa, nakreśliła obraz odchodzącej już do przeszłości kultury ziemiańskiej. Środowisko rodzinne ukazane w jej utworach zwykle daje dziecku poczucie bezpieczeństwa, a habitus ukształtowany w pierwszych latach życia mieści w sobie zbiór fundamentalnych wartości, które pozwalają mierzyć się ze światem. Zgodnie z teorią Pierre’a Bourdieu świat zewnętrzny, zwłaszcza system edukacji uzależnionej od państw zaborczych, stanowi przestrzeń przemocy symbolicznej. Dom pozostaje ostoją ładu moralnego i politycznego, a rodzice mentorami łagodzącymi przemocowe oddziaływanie systemów zewnętrznych. Rogoszówna zdecydowanie zrywa z sielankowym wyobrażeniem dzieciństwa, ukazując je jako etap trudny, bo nieuchronnie powiązany z kształtowaniem nowego habitusu, w którym narzucone wartości nakładają się na prymarny porządek ukształtowany w środowisku rodzinnym. Family habitus in the works of Zofia Rogoszówna The image of home and family occupies an important place in Zofia Rogoszówna's work. In her novel Dziecinny Dwór (1907), the writer draws on her childhood memories and presents a picture of a landed class culture that is now a thing of the past. The family described in her works usually gives the child a sense of security. The habitus (understood as a set of values), formed in the first years of a child's life, allows the protagonists to face the world. According to Pierre Bourdieu's theory, the external world, especially an education system dependent on partitioner states, constitutes a space of symbolic violence. The home remains a refuge of moral and political order, and parents are mentors who mitigate the violent impact of external systems. Rogoszówna decisively breaks with the idyllic image of childhood, portraying it as a difficult stage, as it is inevitably linked to the shaping of a new habitus, in which imposed values overlap with the primordial order formed in the family environment.

    Obraz rodziny w polskich i francuskich książkach dla dzieci

    Rodzina to ważny temat w literaturze dla dzieci i młodzieży. W utworach dla najmłodszych ukazywana jest inaczej niż w tekstach dla dzieci starszych i dla młodzieży – jako środowisko bezpieczne i dające akceptację. Specyfika obrazu rodziny w polskiej literaturze dla dzieci została uwidoczniona poprzez zestawienie z francuskimi książeczkami dla dzieci. Francuskie publikacje, mimo popularnonaukowego charakteru, zwykle operują fabułą. Różnorodność przeżywana w duchu wolności, równości i braterstwa jest w nich ukazana jako bogactwo i źródło radości. Polskie książeczki podkreślają wartość rodziny, pozbawione są jednak lekkości i żartobliwości obecnej w tekstach francuskich. Zróżnicowany obraz rodziny ukazywany w książeczkach o charakterze informacyjnym w niewielkim stopniu znajduje swoje odzwierciedlenie w tekstach literackich. Family is an important topic in literature for children and youth. In works for the youngest readers, it is presented differently than in texts for older children and youth – as a safe environment that offers acceptance. The specificity of the image of the family in Polish literature for children has been illustrated in this article by comparing it with French books for children. French books usually operate with a plot and combine the informational character with artistic values. The diversity experienced in the spirit of freedom, equality and fraternity is shown in them as a richness and a source of joy. Polish books emphasize the value of the family, but they are devoid of the lightness and playfulness present in French texts. The diverse image of the family presented in books with informational content is to a small extent reflected in literary texts.

    Niemieckie ścieżki Piotrusia Pana. O niemieckim pośrednictwie w pierwszym polskim przekładzie powieści "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" J.M. Barriego

    The article presents the results of the analysis of the first Polish translation of J.M. Barrie’s "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" authored by Zofia Rogoszówna ("Przygody Piotrusia Pana", 1913) as a mediated translation. Based on a method inspired by textual criticism, inside the framework of indirect translation studies, I argue that Rogoszówna’s version was based on the German translation "Peter Pan im Waldpark" (1911) by Irmgard Funcke. The article also addresses the questions of how, due to the multistage transmission of the text, the profile of its projected addressee changes; how, by means of translational shifts, translators “adjust” the original to the sensibilities of the readers (by domestication or cultural universalisation); how, therefore—through the prism of linguistic transfer—thinking about the child and the role of juvenile literature in England, Germany and Poland of the early twentieth century can be characterised. Artykuł prezentuje wyniki analizy pierwszego polskiego tłumaczenia powieści "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" J.M. Barriego autorstwa Zofii Rogoszówny pt. "Przygody Piotrusia Pana" (1913) jako przekładu zapośredniczonego. W oparciu o metodę zainspirowaną krytyką tekstów, wewnątrz ramy badań nad przekładem niebezpośrednim, dowiedzione zostaje, że wersja Rogoszówny opierała się na niemieckim tłumaczeniu pt. "Peter Pan im Waldpark" (1911) autorstwa Irmgard Funcke. Artykuł jest również próbą udzielenia odpowiedzi na pytania o to, jak w wyniku wieloetapowej transmisji tekstu zmienia się profil jego projektowanego odbiorcy; jak za pomocą translatorskich przesunięć tłumaczki „przystosowały” tekst wyjściowy do wrażliwości czytelników (stosując domestykację lub uniwersalizację kulturową); jak zatem – przez pryzmat transferu językowego – scharakteryzować można myślenie o dziecku oraz rolę literatury dla młodych w Anglii, Niemczech i Polsce w początkach XX wieku.

    Nowa frazeologia publicystyczna

    PL Artykuł ukazuje mechanizmy powstawania nowych jednostek frazeologicznych we współczesnym języku polskim. Autorzy prezentują trzy typy innowacji frazeologicznych, wyrażeń rzeczownikowych, np. szklany sufit, efekt cappuccino, aksamitna rewolucja, które pojawiają się w tekstach publicystycznych i w mediach elektronicznych. Swoje badania opierają również na danych z Narodowego Korpusu Języka Polskiego. Celem analiz jest ukazanie budowy i właściwości semantycznych nowych wyrażeń frazeologicznych opartych na schemacie efekt + czego/kogo, rewolucja + jaka/czego (tzw. matryce frazemotwórcze). EN The article is concentrated on the specifics of construction of new phraseological units in the contemporary Polish language. In the article have been presented tree types of noun phrases, which occur in media and in journalistic texts (for example szklany sufit – glass ceiling, efekt cappuccino, aksamitna rewolucja). The analysis includes, inter alia, data of National Corpus of Polish. The aim of the study is to describe the language status and properties of the latest phrasems, the construction of which is based on a specific scheme (phrasematic matrix): efekt + czego/kogo, rewolucja + jaka/czego. According to the observations made in the article, the meaning of the considered phraseological expressions is being modified and their use expands.

    Futuryści się śmieją

    The Futurists Are Laughing In the article the author analyses the futurist views on laughter. Using the phenomenological analyses of Isaac Passi and Simon Critchley, the author shows the oscillations of the futurist comicality between the solemnity and the tragic experience of existence. In the conclusion the author proposes a notion in opposition to the Derrida-Platonic idea of the pharmakon; an understanding of laughter which he names jadyczne [a pun utilising “yad” and “venom” which in Polish sound the same]. In this respect, more visibly than in the pharmakon, this understanding retains the textual presence and emergence of risus.

    Narratologia Lévi-Straussa – lektury polemiczne

    The article addresses the origins of narratology – the methodology whose forerunner was Vladimir Propp. The author emphasizes polemic nature of Lévi- -Strauss’ critical analysis of Morphology of the Folk Tale by Propp. Moreover, he criticizes Lévi-Strauss’ approach to myth indicating that his model of structural analysis of myth, despite its strengths, has also basic and important defects. In conclusion, the author discusses narratology “after Lévi-Strauss”.

    The problem of shaping (in August Zamoyski’s definition) related to multimedia. The author of the article presents the project of August Zamojski, a Polish artist and theoretician of art, who created his own, very modern idea of artistic experience. This project was discussed in the context of mediumistics and in the confrontation with new tendencies within the theory of literature. It is the first so spacious interpretation of this project.

    „Mała” historia przekładu. Złoty wiek angielskiej literatury dziecięcej w tłumaczeniach na język polski – zarys

    The Golden Age of English-language literature for children began about 1865, when Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was published, and it continued with the works of writers such as Louisa May Alcott, James Matthew Barrie, Lyman Frank Baum, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Kenneth Grahame, Rudyard Kipling, Hugh Lofting, Alan Alexander Milne, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Edith Nesbit, Beatrix Potter, Robert Louis Stevenson, Pamela Lyndon Travers or Mark Twain. The first Polish translations of English children’s classics, in turn, appeared at the end of the 19th century and continued to be published throughout the 20th century. The main aim of the article is twofold. First, it proposes to create an outline of the history of Polish translations of English classical books for children, in the temporal perspective (from 1870s, when the first translations were published, up to now) as well as in terms of the quantity of translated works. Secondly, it attempts to answer the question about mutual influences between cultures, writers and works of art (in translation) and suggests the hypothesis that the masterpieces of Polish children’s literature were somehow “caused” and inspired by the translations of children’s classics created before them.

    Celem artykułu jest przeprowadzenie analizy komparatystycznej pokrewieństw tekstowych łączących debiutancki utwór polskiej pisarki Stefanii Szuchowej za-tytułowany Tajemnice motyli (1920) z opowieścią Jamesa Matthew Barriego Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens [Piotruś Pan w Ogrodach Kensingtońskich] (1906), która w literaturze polskiej zaistniała po raz pierwszy w roku 1913 dzięki prze-kładowi Zofii Rogoszówny jako Przygody Piotrusia Pana. Istotnym kontekstem, który towarzyszy prowadzonym przez autorkę tekstu dociekaniom, jest również niemal nieznana biografia Szuchowej, pisarki debiutującej w dwudziestoleciu mię-dzywojennym, będącym w Polsce szczególnie intensywnym okresem w rozwoju oryginalnej oraz przekładowej twórczości literackiej dla dzieci. Analizę filiacji teks towych między utworami Szuchowej i Barriego uzupełnia studium porównaw-cze niezwykłych podobieństw ilustracji Stefana Norblina, które towarzyszą pierw-szemu wydaniu Tajemnic motyli, do grafik Arthura Rackhama z książki Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

    Canton in Polish Travel Writing of the First Half of the 20th Century The topic of the paper are the descriptions of the city of Canton in Polish travel writing of the first half of the 20th century. The primary focus is the works of following Polish authors: Halina Bujakowska, Roman Fajans, Antoni Ferdynand Ossendowski, Witold Urbanowicz. Methodology of research is based on imagology and postcolonialism. The analysis of the image of Canton will concentrate on three broad topics: 1) Canton as the heart of China, 2) Canton as a city of contrasts, 3) curiosities of Canton.

    (Meta)discursive uses of Latin HEUS

    In the present paper the polemic status of the Latin interjection heus is discussed in the context of its attestations in the Plautine dialogues. After applying the methods of the conversational analysis to the data, we distinguish two different “particle” uses of the exclamation. On the level of the global organization of the dialogue heus is employed as a summon move, adapted also by Plautus to the conditions of the off-stage communication. Moreover, there are also examples of a “particle” use inside one utterance, where the interjection operates on the illocutionary force of the message. The results of the examination provide more arguments for the exclusion of the so-called appellative interjection from the word class of interjections.
